murjoni merriweather

The Walk is a figurative experience for fans and newcomers to Murjoni Merriweather’s work as a sculptor and her artistic practice. The former Creative Alliance resident artist pulls from work created during and after her Creative Alliance Residency and her Alma Lewis Artist Residency, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 2022. Through this multipart exhibition, the viewer has a literal walk through the creative and production process of Murjoni Merriweather.

You are first met with a clay mound centered in the Cycle Circle, a foundational section where you are confronted with the raw materials used by the artist. Murjoni has always thought of her process as “important and therapeutic.” She states: “It has provided me a space to listen to my current emotional state and allows a place of honesty and vulnerability.” The artist allows the viewer to partake in an interactive journaling installation–a space for the visitor to write and create their own visions. You are encouraged to participate with inclusionary imagery and language.

Artist Bio
Sculptor, Murjoni Merriweather grew up in Temple Hills, Maryland. During her time there, she fell in love with art at the age of 8 learning how to draw from trial and error and art kits her parents would give her. After dabbling in photography, drawing, painting, and graphic design, Murjoni tried out ceramics in 8th grade, and her heart grew whole. In this new medium of clay that she felt so connected to, she started making work that reflected the Black experience. In 2018, Murjoni graduated from The Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Ceramics and concentration in Film/Video. During this time, she explored celebrating Blackness through figurative forms. Murjoni has been able to expand her knowledge and experiment at places like Creative Alliance (Baltimore, 2019-2022), Fountainhead Residency (Miami, 2021), and The Alma Lewis Residency (PA, 2022) in ways that talk about emotion through the clay itself. Murjoni currently resides in Baltimore Maryland with her cat, Kiva, where she continues to aim toward inspiring, celebrating, and elevating Black culture.
