Avant-garde sound artist, master percussionist and composer, Tatsuya Nakatani, performs genre-defying solo works and leads local players in playing complex, harmonic compositions on Chinese wind gongs using his original bowing technique. The Japanese concept of ma (emptiness) and the physicality of vibration are central to Nakatani’s compositions and philosophy of sound.
The Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO) is a mobile community project. For each performance, Tastsuya Nakatani trains 14 local players to play complex harmonic compositions on the bowed gong under his conducting. Originally from Osaka Japan, Tatsuya Nakatani is an avant garde sound artist and master percussionist. A Chinese wind gong is the base for an original extended method of playing using a bow he developed and handcrafts specifically for his instrumentation. His work is non-traditional, contemporary sound art that escapes categorization within a particular musical genre.
