A night of wild hypnotic, drone laden grooves from Bulgaria to Baltimore.
Kaynak Pipers of Bulgaria bring multiple kaba gaida (singe drone, low-pitched Bulgarian bagpipe) masters together, along with traditional drummers, to preserve the traditional music from their home in the Rhodope mountain region of Bulgaria. The word "kaynak" means "source" and is used to name a kaba gaida performer's specific tunes/instrumentals, often demonstrating their performing skills. The sound of the solo instrument is haunting, emotional, and wild. In ensemble format, there is a force and power rarely heard in the United States.
Closing this evening of aural explorations, Baltimore’s own Horse Lords call upon African poly-rhythms, minimalism, krautrock, and more, to create bold Baltimore rock and roll. The quartet of bass, sax, guitar and drums find a groove that is unmistakable and undeniable. Their recent recordings have garnered them National attention - and they are simply awesome live.
