Join renowned artist and Crankie-maker Katherine Fahey for a special two-session workshop geared for adults to make hand-cranked movies. Bring your ideas in-progress! In the first session, Fahey will discuss different types of crankies and how to make one, guiding participants through the stages of planning, storyboarding, and making a simple housing. In between sessions, attendees develop their story or song, and research source materials. When they return for the second class, Fahey will help trouble shoot, and work through transitions and timing of scenes towards a finished crankie.
What is a crankie?
*A Crankie or Moving Panorama is a hand cranked visual storytelling device displayed on a scroll. It's a box containing a ream of paper or fabric rolled around 2 posts, which is then pulled across the front, much like film in an old camera. Fahey’s crankies are a combination of papercuts and shadow puppetry, but they can be drawn, printed, painted, or sewn.
