Perhaps best known as a member of rock band Wilco since 2004, guitarist and sonic explorer Nels Cline has been churning out an incredible musical output since 1978, tapping into a singular intimacy and cranked up experimental mayhem all his own. In 2013, he joined forces with the young jazz guitar player Julian Lage, first to perform and then to record for a project set for release in late November, 2014. At 26, Lage has already established himself as one of the premier guitar players of his time, equally balancing free improvisation with a country, folk and hot jazz style. Together, Cline and Lage slide between their own compositions and an unhinged experimentalism. As Lage said of the duo’s sound, it is “200 percent power.” 7:30pm | $22, $20 mbrs.
“Whether Cline is convulsing through a solo that flirts with the edge of chaos alongside Wilco or his own expressive projects…his relentlessly exploratory approach has become something of a signature at a time when many guitarists sound interchangeable.” Chris Barton, Los Angeles Times
“There’s a disarming spirit of generosity in the musicianship of Julian Lage, and a keener sense of judicious withholding. A guitarist with roots tangled up in jazz, folk, classical and country music, he has spent most of his life bathed in a bright, expectant light.” Nate Chinen, New York Times
