3134 Eastern Ave., Baltimore, MD, 21224
A global DANCE PARTY headlined by master of the utterly futuristic sounding (yet ancient) Sierra Leonean musician Janka Nabay, along with his band the Bubu Gang with Baltimore’s own experimental sitarist, vocalist and producer Ami Dang and one the truly great Afro-beat selectors, DJ Underdog.
Sierra Leonean singer Janka Nabay ‘s bubu hypnotic dance music has a history that spans centuries. The bubu rhythms are cloaked in mythology: according to Nabay, a young "bubu boy" took it from witches 500 years ago, sacrificing his own life in the process. When Islam reached Sierra Leone, bubu became a part of processionals during Ramadan; this is the music Nabay learned as a child. In Sierra Leon, Nabay's take on the bubu style quickly won dedicated fans, where his cassettes sold in the tens of thousands.
The decade-long civil war that wracked Sierra Leone pushed Nabay to immigrate to New York where he began earning a living working in fried chicken joints and food trucks up and down the East Coast while selling CD’s on his own. Soon his music found its way into the Brooklyn underground and Nabay built a new version of his band out of indie experimenters-turned-acolytes, The Bubu Gang, crafting a sound steeped in bubu but with a twist influenced by his new home. In 2012, the global music curators Luaka Bop released the first full length of Janka Nabay & The Bubu Gang, En Yay Sah ("I'm Scared) to great acclaim.
