Overview Flickering Treasures Celebrates The Patterson and the Vanished Movie Theaters of Highlandtown

Celebrate The Patterson and Highlandtown’s Vanished Movie Theaters with Flickering Treasures author-photographer Amy Davis.

Share your memories with a panel of speakers as we celebrate The Patterson and other Highlandtown movie houses such as the Grand, ( Conkling St.), State (E. Monument st.), Nemo (Eastern Ave.) Roxy (E. Fayette) and half a dozen other classic theaters. Author-photographer Amy Davis will present a slideshow of your favorite Highlandtown theaters.

After the program, Davis will be joined by local author Rafael Alvarez for a joint signing of their recently released books, Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters, a photo book by Davis (Johns Hopkins University Press), and Basilio Boullosa Stars in the Fountain of Highlandtown, a new fiction collection by Alvarez (CityLit Press). Additional panelists include former Durkee Enterprises executives (builders, owners and operators of the Patterson) David Nolte and Frank Durkee III. The grandparents of both David and Frank were the founding Durkee partners. David's grandfather, Gus Nolte, was the manager of the Patterson, and his great-uncle Henry was the projectionist. Oh the tales they have to tell!

About Flickering Treasures Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters is a revelatory chronicle of Baltimore’s movie theaters over the past century, eloquently told through extraordinary old and new photographs, and poignant reminiscences.

Amy Davis, an award-winning photojournalist at The Baltimore Sun since 1987, is passionate about her adopted city. Her love of Baltimore’s theaters was kindled by her affection for the Senator, the Art Deco gem in north Baltimore, but her affection now extends to all of Highlandtown’s memorable movie houses.
