Mariachi Flor de Toloache
Event Type: music/performance
“There should be fireworks named after this band, for all the intensity and color and life that bursts forth from Flor de Toloache.” Marisa Arbona-Ruiz, NPR Music
Traditionally known for its romantic machismo, mariachi is not normally the domain of women. In recent years, that has been changing with New York’s Mariachi Flor de Toloache(pronounced to-lo-AH-cheh) at the fore of that change.
Mariachi Flor De Toloache takes its name from the toloache flower. "It's a moonflower that opens up at night," says group founder and vocalist Mireya Ramos, "that has been used in love potions since ancient Aztec times in Mexico." Members hail from diverse cultural backgrounds such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy and the United States, and use this global influence to stir up the sonic potion that is their take on Mariachi.
Despite initial criticism by some traditionalists for 'not being Mexican enough,' or 'mariachi enough,' the band's first, self-titled album earned them a 2015 Grammy nomination for Best Ranchera Album. Then came more international touring, collaborations with No Te Va Gustar, Chicano Batman and Luba Mason, three Fania Records music videos, and even a performance in a New York subway train for a Kate Spade commercial.
Building a reputation for a brave take on Mariachi, with open ended interpretations and new compositions, they still are grounded by sublime vocals- the hallmark of any great mariachi. For traditionalists or modernists alike, Mariachi Flor de Toalache is an exciting listen.
