Overview

Overview Miss Representation

Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s film exposing the insidious effects of how women are portrayed by mass media premiered at Sundance in 2011, was screened on Oprah’s network, and has been seen by over a million people. Interviews with powerful women from Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi and Gloria Steinem, to Margaret Cho and Rosario Dawson leave you armed with new perspective and a passion to change things.

Media critic Max Weiss hosts the film and an insightful, open panel discussion after. Panelists include:

Mia Jones is a grass roots arts organizer and the director of Youth Empowerment through Conflict Resolution at American Friends Service Committee.

Dr. Sheri Parks (Univ. of MD) appears frequently in public and in the media to discuss popular culture as public mythology and its effect upon individuals, families and minority cultures. Her most recent book is Fierce Angels: The Strong Black Woman in American Life and Culture due out in paperback from Chicago Review April 2013.

Catalina Rodriguez moved to the US from Ecuador when she was 20 and is one of our dynamic Highlandtown neighbors. Oh yes, and by day, she’s the Hispanic Liaison for the Mayor’s Office.

Bernadette Wegenstein is a linguist, filmmaker, and Director of Johns Hopkins’ Center of Advanced Media Studies. She’s the author of several books and articles considering the intersections of the body, technology and media, and the director of the 2007 documentary Made Over in America.

Max Weiss (host) is the Managing Editor of Baltimore Magazine, longtime film critic for WBAL TV and radio, one time staff writer for the City Paper and a ubiquitous Baltimore media presence generally. Bringing Miss Representation to the Creative Alliance was her idea!
