Charm City Kitty Club presents Back to The Land

Photo of Event or Program Item
Fri – Sat May 14 & 15, 7pm kitty cocktails, 8pm show
$10, $7 mbrs.

You can take the kitty out of the city, but you can't take away her charm. So before you migrate to Michigan, come Back To The Land Cabaret with the Charm City Kitty Club! Celebrate the simple life—when wearing flannel was feminist fashion— The Charm City Kitty Club heads to the country as MCs Citizen Rahne and Liz Downing lay out a country feast of talent serving up: the gripping drag of Dutch Ticklestick, the comedy of New York's Goddess Perlman, the neo-60s rock-pop melodies of 9bobNOTE, the mysterious Audrey Chen and germinal feminist film by Barbara Hammer plus and original video by the Charm City Kitty Club crew made specially for Back to the Land and much more!
And wait till you see what’s on the menu for dessert…

7pm Kitty Cocktails, 8pm Show, $7, $5 mbrs. Fri May 14 is ASL interpreted

The Charm City Kitty Club sets out to carve a unique social and cultural niche for lesbian, dyke, bisexual, transgender and transsexual women and all our allies. We’re plumbing the shockingly rich diversity in Baltimore City and beyond to present a knock-out line-up of performance and music in a Cabaret-style setting at the Creative Alliance.

Performers for May 14 & 15, 2004:

Goddess Perlman
The Goddess Perlman is a comedian/chanteuse out of NYC who has graced the stages of Lollapalooza, The NYC Burlesque Fest, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and she recently hosted The Go Girls Music Festival and her own festival, The Goddess Fest in Upstate New York. When she's not producing, Perlman performs regularly with the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, Fisherman's Burlesque, Scott Nevins Presents at Therapy, Starshine Burlesque and The Peek-A-Boo Revue (Philly).

Lucy Corin
Lucy Corin, assistant professor of English at University of California at Davis is reading from her debut novel Everyday Psychokillers: A History for Girls, a novel that examines what it means to grow up in a culture of girl-killers. Her short stories have appeared in numerous literary journals as well as several anthologies.

Audrey Chen
Classically trained at the Peabody Conservatory, Audrey Chen has since exploded onto the new music and performance art scene on the East Coast. Using her trusty cello, self-styled vocal techniques and ever surprising content/concepts, she will grace the Kitty stage with a short performance created specifically for the night.

9bobNote
9bobNOTE is a powerhouse of original pop-rock music! Hailing from Baltimore since 1997, this mainly female band boasts a funk driven rhythm section that is puncuated by lead electric guitar and lead acoustic violin. 9bobNOTE released their 3rd cd, "Cover Up Show", in 2003 to much critical acclaim.

Joanna Hoffman
Joanna Hoffman is a spoken word artist expressing anti-Barbie rage, smooth pick-up lines, political angst, her take on slam poetry and the joy of stepping outside the box, all in a darn poetic way. She plans to run for President in 2024.

Dutch Ticklestick
Whether gracing the stage as a county gentleman or a smooth crooner, Dutch Ticklestick will bring out the blushing grrrrl in you. His slick, rump smackin’ mac daddy style will take you back to the days when men were men, women were women, and everyone had big hair.

Back to the Land
Orchestrated by local filmmaker and Kitty Club curator Catherine Pancake, the Charm City Kitty Club brings together local lesthespians and filmmakers to present a Truly Tall Tale from our Lesbian Separatist collective memory. No punchline, gag, or Valerie Solanas fan will be spared!

Sisters!
A Film by Barbara Hammer
(1973) 16mm, color, sound, 7-3/4 min
No one can take us back to the land quicker than pioneer feminist filmmaker Barbara Hammer. An internationally recognized film artist, Hammer has made 80 films/videos for which she received the prestigious Frameline Award for making a significant contribution to lesbian and gay cinema.
Sisters! is Hammer during the early 1970’s heyday of lesbian feminism. She brings a celebration and collage of lesbians, including footage of the Women's International Day march in SF and joyous dancing from the last night of the second Lesbian Conference where Family of Woman played; as well as images of women doing all types of traditional "men's" work.
