Self-taught painter Morgan Monceaux was born in Louisiana, studied theology and music, served in Vietnam, and opened galleries of black artists in Seattle and San Francisco before Grace Jones’ Slave to the Rhythm inspired him to pick up a brush himself. Today his brightly colored, idiosyncratic portraits of presidents and jazz legends are in the collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and have exhibited at AVAM, the Library of Congress and several presidential libraries. Divas presents a pantheon of celebrated opera singers in full regalia.
