Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music

Gender queer rockumentary road movie w/ The Degenerettes, Katastrophe, The Cliks, + more

For many musicians, the road is both an inspiration and a challenge. When Simon Strikeback and Madsen Minax (of the bluegrass band Actor Slash Model) realized they had a trunkload of untold a road stories, they set out make a feature
documentary about gender identity and rebellion in music. In 2006, they packed their instruments and cameras and struck out on the road. Over 3
years, they travelled the U.S shooting 15 bands (including Degenerettes, CAmm Dir Kristen Anchor’s band) and dozens of individuals performing, living, and discussing songwriting, venues, media representation, passing
privilege, and the politics of gender identity. In a media climate where most images of transpeople are at best as victims and at worst as “freaks,”
Riot Acts is radical departure -- no victims; just real people living interesting lives and making music. (The film also features appearances by
CA staffers Kristen Anchor and Megan Hamilton, and puppets by Dawn Swartz and Brittney Huff!)

Reception with filmmakers, live performances by Jessica Xavier and The Degenerettes, and soup dinner precedes the screening and Q & A with the filmmakers follows. Dir. Madsen Minax, 2009, 72 Min.
