June 18–28 Opens Thu June 19, 5:30-7:30pm
As a child, William Diggs was captivated by the strength and history of American Indians, and for close to thirty five years, he’s been painting portraits of them. Beginning with historic images from the Smithsonian archives, or from his own photos of contemporary Native Americans, Diggs places solitary figures on stark white backgrounds within patterned frames. They appear both flattened out and brought into sharper focus, integrated within the painting to suggest the subject’s rootedness in a spiritual landscape.
