In Baltimore’s history of artists’ eateries, two in particular stand out: the legendary Martick’s Restaurant Français on Mulberry Street and the former Louie’s Bookstore Café on Charles Street. Jimmy Rouse, whose paintings are on view in the Main Gallery, trained with Morris Martick in the 80’s, then opened Louie’s in the 90’s, which pioneered a lounge-and-nosh atmosphere that made it an “it” place from day one. Tonight, artist veterans of the two spots share stories of what-it-was-like-when, pondering the alchemical connection between art, a cup of good coffee, a simmering bouillabaisse or a simple slice of cheesecake.
