Overview OPEN MINDS

Open Minds is our signature Education program, where we combine youth leadership, literacy, visual and performing arts twice a week in a youth club! Lead by Teaching artist, Ebony Evans, youth will explore stories of West African folklore. They will read Seven Spools of Thread, A Kwanzaa Story, and other African books as inspiration for patterns and designs to create screen prints. Using the book,Beautiful Blackbird, students will make their own unique bird collages to reinforce the theme that they can all be different and beautiful at the same time. Youth will create African Sky Gods which will be a marriage of their superhero and ruler of the sky with inspiration from the book, Why the Sky Is So Far Away, that expresses the importance of treating the things around them with respect. Open Minds culminates as a performance during the Día del Niño festival on SAT APR 28, 11AM-2PM on Pagoda Hill.
