FILM SCREENING: Out Of Our Heads
Film Screening and Panel
Out of Our Heads: A Male Journey into the Heart documents a group of men working together to restore and renew their masculinity. These men seek to deal with life’s wounds, express deep emotions they have suppressed, realize their gifts, and bring them forth more fully. They find healing in the context of a rich and supportive community. Such an intimate portrait of a male community has never before been achieved on film.
Allen Moore is the director, cameraman and co-editor for Out of Our Heads: A Male Journey into the Heart. Allen has been producing, directing, photographing and editing his own documentaries for almost 40 years, specializing in ethnographic films that sensitively depict small communities and their struggles. He first participated in Men’s Wisdom Council in 2011, and became convinced that it was an experience that should be shared with the larger world. Allen has also served as a director of photography for several of Ken Burns’ historical documentaries shown on PBS, including several multi-part series, The Civil War, Baseball, Lewis and Clark, The National Parks, and most recently, Prohibition. In 1981, Allen completed The Shepherds of Berneray, a documentary of a year’s time in the life of a Gaelic-speaking island community in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It won several awards, and Allen has gone on to win numerous awards and two Emmy nominations for his cinematography work. Since the fall of 2004, Allen has served as a faculty member in the Film and Video Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).
Leo Horrigan is producer and co-editor for Out of Our Heads. Leo worked in the newspaper industry for 20 years and for the past two decades has made his living in the public health field, dealing in particular with the sustainability of our food system. He began attending the Men’s Wisdom Council in 2001, and has been both a “camper” and a facilitator there. The Council launched him into poetry writing, and he has performed his poems at numerous venues in the Baltimore area and elsewhere, including the Creative Alliance. In 2010, Allen and Leo made a film together entitled Out to Pasture: The Future of Farming? which profiles chicken, dairy and hog farmers who are striving to raise food animals in ways that are sustainable both ecologically and economically. Out to Pasture was featured in two film festivals – the D.C. Environmental Film Festival in the nation’s capital and the Chesapeake Film Festival on Maryland’s Eastern Shore – and was also screened at the Creative Alliance. Leo also co-produced Food Frontiers, a short documentary about access to healthy food, which was featured in four film festivals.
