Music From the Sole - Leo Sandoval & Greg Richardson
Brazilian tap dancer Leo Sandoval and American bassist Gregory Richardson have come together to create “Music from the Sole,” born from their experience together as street performers in New York City. When they first performed with Michelle Dorrance's tap company Dorrance Dance at the Jacob’s Pillow dance festival last summer, they hit it off as each other’s creative playmates, sounding board for ideas, and partners for improvisation. Soon after, they began busking on sunny afternoons in Manhattan, always dragging along a portable tap floor and an upright bass. They developed this hour-long show that also includes amazing guest dancers and musicians performing Leo and Greg's original music and choreography, Afro-Brazilian beats, improvisation, and high-energy tapping guaranteed to get your body moving!
Brazilian-born tap phenom’ Leonardo (Leo) Sandoval is quickly gaining a reputation in the tap world for his musicality and for adding his own Brazilian flavor to tap dancing. He began his dance studies at age 6 in Piracicaba (São Paulo State). When he was 11-years-old, he began appearing on Brazilian TV, and at 18, he was invited to Los Angeles to attend the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, as well as the L.A. Tap Festival. Leo also co-founded the Cia Carioca de Sapateado in Rio de Janeiro with the aim of bringing tap dance to a wider audience in Brazil by incorporating Brazilian rhythms, music, and dance styles into tap.
In 2013, Leo moved to New York, and performed and taught at the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, America’s largest festival of tap and percussive arts, where, at 25, he was the youngest faculty member. He is currently working with Dorrance Dance and is also a member of Chloe Arnold’s company Apt 33. Currently, Leo splits his time between New York and Baltimore.
Gregory Richardson is a Brooklyn-based musician focusing on upright, electric bass, and drums. Richardson tours abroad with the band Darwin Deez and gigs around New York with the trio Analogue Experimental, playing son, salsa, jazz, cumbia, and boogaloo. Besides working with Dorrance Dance, he also plays bass and percussion with Nicholas Van Young's rhythmic dance ensemble, SoundMovement Dance Company. Last summer, he composed music and performed in the world premiere of Dorrance Dance's show ETM: The Initial Approach at the Jacob's Pillow festival. 8pm. $20, $17 mbrs., Door: $23,$20 mbrs.
