Lauren Gilson was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended the Waldorf School of Baltimore from Pre-K through 8th Grade, a hands on education concerned with imaginative cognitive and creative development, where she was first introduced to watercolor, woodworking, wet clay sculpture, and textile work. In high school Lauren continued an intensively creative education at High Mowing Waldorf Boarding School in Wilton, New Hampshire where she studied under Eunice Chalmers, specializing in observational drawing and painting, as well as learned techniques such as weaving, batik and darkroom photography.
Lauren went on to study at Alfred University School of Art and Design NYSCC in Alfred, New York, ultimately focusing on Oil Painting, Sculpture, and Alternative Photographic Processes. In her final year she was the assistant teacher to multiple Junior level classes, and was also the manager of “Repo”, Alfred’s Reusable Materials Depot. She was awarded her Bachelor’s of Fine Art in 2013 at Alfred University College of Art and Design, and after participation with fellow select graduates in “The Liberation Project Continued”, an international show led by Josef Schuetzenhofer, she returned to Baltimore where she currently works and resides.
Lauren has since participated in multiple local and international art shows, painted commissioned murals and signage, as well as taught the Portfolio Prep Class for rising high school students class at the Creative Alliance in 2014. Her teaching style focuses on building skill, observational technique and best practice, while at the same time nurturing the creative interests of each student.
