Overview

Overview Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound w/ Chaise Lounge

Paul Cebar may hail from Milwaukee, but his cosmopolitan rock is unique mixture of R&B, Caribbean, and New Orleans style - a funky, lyrically charged racket that is explosive yet intimate. Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture. His time spent in his second home of New Orleans, as a musicologist in Florida, and as a journeyman wanderer in Cuba, is reflected in his music. At the core is gifted songwriting. Friends and admirers of Paul include Bonnie Raitt, Nick Lowe, Chris Smither, John Hiatt and Cesar Rosas. Tomorrow Sound drummer Reggie Bordeaux, New Orleans native percussionist Mac Perkins, and bassist Mike Fredrickson throw down some of the best dance grooves in the business. Multi-instrumentalist Bob Jennings implies a much larger ensemble with his multi-hued contributions on keys and reeds.

Chaise Lounge founder Charlie Barnett is a long-time fan of Paul Cebar and excited to open for him! Chaise Lounge performs a blend of music that sounds like it was recorded at DC's Capitol Recording Studios in 1962 and somehow found its way onto today’s pop charts. You might call it “Early Stereo,” or perhaps lounge with a capital “L.” The ensemble includes five of DC’s top jazz musicians. Featuring the soft, luminous vocals of Marilyn Older, the Chaise Lounge plays sparkling arrangements of standards and original tunes. 8pm. Adv: $20, $15 mbrs. Door: $23, $18 mbrs. Wear your dancin’ shoes!

“Paul Cebar has been a primary investigator and promulgator of funky Afro-Carib-inflected Americana since the ‘80’s.... Cebar stays vital, putting his good foot forward from Green Bay to Baltimore to the Big Easy.” —LA Weekly

“Jubilant, percussive... full-on, pan-ethnic party music.” —The Washington Post

“Some regionalists are dreamers, and while this group of rhythm rounders is situated in Wisconsin, their hearts are somewhere in the fifth ward of New Orleans. They put a lively spin on all sorts of American strains, from second-line to funk to zydeco and they do it with a load of whimsy.” —The Village Voice
