Lafayette Gilchrist - Solo Piano
Silent Film Score & Original Compositions
Event Type: music/performance
A formidable composer and keys player, Lafayette Gilchrist is one of the foremost talents in jazz today. Lafayette recent solo album The View From Here has received enthusiastic critical acclaim, including an extended profile on the prestigious radio show NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross.
This Friday, Creative Alliance is proud provide Lafayette with a lovely baby grand piano, so he can perform pieces from The View From Here, offering a rare opportunity to see him play solo in an intimate ¾ round setting.
Creative Alliance has long hosted performances of new original scores to silent films. Tonight Lafayette brings his own creative touch on that genre with two short films of his choice to close out each set. He will “spontaneously compose” new scores to: The Kleptomaniac and Black Wings. The first is a 1905 film that shows the unequal treatment of two shoplifters from different classes and ethnic backgrounds after they are caught stealing. The archival footage of Black Wings was culled from a 1935 film called Unemployment, The Negro and Aviation by visionary filmmaker William T. Powell who said, “I have an all consuming dream of filling the sky with skilled Black Wings.” As a child, Gilchrist was wholly enamored by black pilots, a fascination that for him became lifelong. In this performance, he merges that love with his unparalleled jazz for a new kind of flight. 8pm | $18, $15 mbrs.
“For someone who came to piano rather late, at 17, has dug deep into its history. He loves the old piano professors who'd pack the punch of a dance band into two hands at the keyboard. Players like Eubie Blake, and could keep going for hours without exhausting their folkloric materials. If there's one thing Lafayette Gilchrist loves, it's feeding a groove like that, as on his new solo album The View From Here.” - Kevin Whitehead - NPR Music
