Overview Billy McComiskey's Pride of New York

One of the great ages of Irish Music (1930-1990) did not begin on the Emerald Isle but sprung from the immigrant neighborhoods of the Bronx and Brooklyn, where the musicians of the Irish diaspora energized their tradition. Irish-descended, Brooklyn-born, Baltimore-based button accordion master Billy McComiskey brings The Pride of New York (PONY), an Irish-American super group from this musical flowering, to the Creative Alliance. The deftly funny godfather of Baltimore’s trad Irish scene, Billy is the protégé of the East Galway master button accordionist Sean McGlynn. With personality to burn, flute and tin whistle player Joanie Madden is the internationally-renowned leader of famed Irish women’s ensemble Cherish the Ladies. Fiddler Brian Conway is a direct musical descendant of the great Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman, and, together with McComiskey and Madden, makes up the melodic core of the ensemble. Keyboard player Brendan Dolan, son of the revered pianist Felix Dolan, gives PONY its distinctive and inimitable "New York sound.” With four All-Ireland Championships among them, expect astonishing musicianship, rare humor, and joyous gratitude for a heritage appreciated. 8pm. $25, $20 mbrs.

Press

"We are all quintessential New York musicians... The musical camaraderie we share is rare." - Brian Conway, PONY “…as good as it gets in Irish traditional music…” - Earle Hitchner, Irish Echo "Musical lions of the Big Apple's Irish music scene and, in Joanie Madden, a weel-kent figure on Glasgow's Celtic Connections stage, their solid, straight Irish tunes are well played... The album reveals and revels in a style more at home in the Bronx than the Burren." - The Scotsman “All these superb players immigrated to New York from all over Ireland. The four of us are the direct result of that. New York has been recognized as the epicenter for Irish music in America and we are 'the pure drop'." - Billy McComiskey, PONY
