SYLLABUS: Spanish for Beginners 1

Students will practice Spanish through exercises that emphasize class and small-group dialogues. Students will learn basic grammar concepts, usually one or two a week, and practice them in class activities. We will start with basic verb forms (-ar, -er, -ir verbs), pronouns, articles, and adjectives then progress towards more complex grammar. Vocabulary will be organized around thematic units that involve real life situations such as “Going Shopping,” and “At the Restaurant.”

 Week I: Students will be able to greet others in Spanish using common phrases. Getting to know each other, learn about students' careers, commitments, goals and Spanish proficiency levels for this class. Students address personal goals for the class-- modifications to the class are based on student's needs. Etiquette & Social Niceties. Practice and new vocabulary about Communication Strategies.

Week II: Students will be able to greet others and engage in small talk using common Spanish phrases. Dialogue: En la calle. Reading and comprehension.  Practice (role play). New vocabulary. Spanish Subject Pronouns. Practice. ‘Tu’ informal and ‘Usted’ formal. Dialogue: Asking for directions. Practice individually and in groups. Handout-new vocabulary.

Week III: Students will be able to use the Spanish alphabet and the ‘to be’ verb forms. Spanish Alphabet (Pronunciation of Vowels and Consonants).  Practice spelling words. The Spanish Articles (definite and indefinite). Use of gender (masculine & feminine).  Nouns (singular & plural). Explanation of the verbs ‘to be’ ‘ser and estar’ and ‘to have’ (haber and tener).  Practice. Dialogue: De compras. Practice individually and in groups.

Week IV: Students will be able to conjugate regular verbs and understand time vocabulary in order to practice shopping for groceries in Spanish. Regular verbs. Conjugation ‘ar’, ‘er’ & ‘ir’. Practice with exercises. Dialogue: De vacaciones. Practice in groups with role play. Exercises and handouts about new vocabulary in the lesson.

Week V: Students will be able to use numbers and order food from a Spanish menu. The cardinal & Ordinal Numbers. Practice in groups. Conjugations and patterns of the verb ‘To go’ (present) and ‘to go to’ (simple future). Practice. Dialogue. En el restaurante . Ordering food and drinks. Practice in groups with role playing. Handouts w/ new vocabulary.

Week VI: Students will be able to talk to the Spanish speaking population to interact with short questions and responses. Cultura Latinoamericana. Reading and practice.Read as a class dialogues that center around various Latin cultures. Specific field role playing scenarios and games are developed for the students to practice as a class and in small groups.

Objective: Students will be able to use time and travel vocabulary in order to book a vacation in Spanish. The time, days of the week, months, seasons, dates, and the weather. Main prepositions.

Other Spanish Grammar that might be included during the program for more advanced students:

Students will be able to use proper pronouns forms in class activities. The verb to have (haber and tener), and the Prepositions  ‘por’ and ‘para’.
