Lúnasa Christmas

w/ Karen Casey

Tickets: $35, $33 mbrs.
Event Link & Tickets
Lúnasa is widely acknowledged as being the finest traditional Irish instrumental band of recent times, renowned for stunning shows honed by superb musicianship, usually held in much larger venues than ours. Lúnasa’s inventive arrangements and bass driven grooves have steered Irish acoustic music into surprising new territory. Their recordings have sold over a quarter of a million, have been hailed as some of the best and most important world music albums anywhere, while their blend of intelligence, innovation, virtuosity, and passion has brought them to the forefront of Celtic music. Lúnasa is Kevin Crawford (flutes, low whistles and tin whistles), Trevor Hutchinson (double bass), Ed Boyd (guitar), Seán Smyth (fiddle and low whistle), and Cillian Vallely (uilleann pipes and low whistles). Christmas with Lúnasa will feature traditional Irish music and Karan Casey, one of the genre’s most innovative and provocative voices.

Promotional Partner: Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival

“The best Irish traditional music band in the world right now.  One of the band’s greatest collective talents is their ability to pull off technically difficult and precise music with a casual, fun air, almost as if the five met for the first time with their various instruments at a pub and joined together spontaneously for a session.” TheWildGeese.com

“ …. this sixth recording by Lunasa reaffirms their reputation as the best Irish traditional instrumental band on the planet.”  THE IRISH ECHO

“… Lúnasa have embarked on another journey, full of hairpin bends and vertiginous peaks, fueled by an insatiable appetite for reconnoitering routes previously uncharted .”  THE IRISH TIMES

Piñatas Navideñas y Posada!

Start in Creative Alliance Lobby, 3134 Eastern Avenue
End at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 600 S. Conkling Street

Event Link & Tickets

Learn Mexican holiday traditions from master and apprentice piñata artisans of Highlandtown! Did you know the piñata once symbolized the devil? It was traditionally made with seven cones, and each one represented a deadly sin in the Catholic tradition when the Spaniards colonized the indigenous people of the New World in the Americas. When the piñata is broken, it is said that good has overcome evil, and all are awarded with the goodies inside!

Posada means lodging in Spanish, and is a procession that re-enacts pregnant Mary and Joseph’s journey leading up to the birth of Christ, or Christmas. In Highlandtown, this is a celebration that connects many American families to Latino families who have few opportunities to share their stories, traditions, and leadership.

Join Mary & Joseph on their journey to find lodging with our Latino community on Saturday, December 20th. Meet in the Creative Alliance lobby at 6pm for a traditional procession with piñatas to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on 600 S Conkling Street for a family-style dinner and piñata breaking!

Creative Alliance organizes bilingual piñata workshops led by piñata masters and apprentices, recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council, who collaborate in various ways as consultants, collaborators, teachers, and as tradition bearers. Piñata workshops, a piñata exhibition, and closing celebration with posadas, are important aspects of Latin American Christmas celebrations and cultures.

Piñata Workshops

A two-day piñata-making workshop kicks off Latino Christmas celebrations at Creative Alliance on Wednesday, December 10 from 5-8pm with papier mâché, glue making, and attaching cones. Complete your piñata to take home on Sunday, December 14 from 3-6pm for full decoration and tissue paper cutting techniques. Workshops are bilingual and include all materials.
Suggested $10 donation per workshop. | Register 410-276-1651

Beautiful hand-made piñatas are on sale in the Marquee Lounge from December 10 through January 31
